Older People

West Sussex has a population of 882,600 (2021 census) with an ageing older population compared to England overall. Those aged 65 and over currently comprise 23% of the resident population (2022 estimate, 205,800) which is expected to increase to 28% of the total population by 2035 (267,200). Figure 2 below depicts this information.
The working age population will decrease proportionally from 60% (539,000) of the population in 2022 to 57% (546,000) in 2035 as shown in Figures 2 and 3.

Arun and Chichester districts currently have the largest proportion of older people (33%). The population of older people in Arun is projected to increase by 14,300 people by 2035 whilst Horsham, Crawley and Chichester will see the biggest percentage increases in older people (36%, 33% and 31% respectively). This is depicted in Figure 4 below which shows older people population in 2022 and projected growth for 2035 for each of the district or boroughs in West Sussex.
