Area profiles for extra care housing (ECH)

Adur has no current ECH provision. People from Adur needing ECH have to access a service in another part of the county. Adur has more working age adults with physical and sensory impairments using ECH currently. Key parts of Adur of interest for new ECH developments are the larger urban areas of Lancing, Shoreham and Southwick.

Arun has two ECH services currently - in Rustington and Eastergate. The largest group of ECH users by age are 60-64 year-olds, with the greatest cohort of need being older people with physical and sensory impairments, followed by working age adults with the same needs. The district has the largest projected growth of older people by 2035. Key parts of Arun for ECH development are Bognor Regis and Littlehampton

Chichester has two ECH services currently - in central Chichester and Selsey. The majority of users are 75-79 which is a slightly older age profile than in other areas, although there is a significant proportion of Chichester younger adults aged 55-59 using ECH with both physical and sensory impairments and mental health needs. Chichester is projected to have one of the largest growths of older people by 2035. The district covers a large rural area with consideration needed for the location of new services

Crawley currently has the highest number of residents using ECH and a wider age demographic of ECH users than other areas, with a significant number of people aged over 90 using ECH. Crawley currently has three ECH services mostly centrally located in the borough. Crawley residents are also using ECH schemes in other districts. With the demographic of this area, ECH schemes need to be predominantly affordable rent and shared ownership.

Horsham has three ECH services currently with two located on the outskirts of Horsham and one in Billingshurst. Services have an older age group of residents using ECH aged over 90 but also a significant number of younger adults with physical and sensory impairments. Horsham has the second largest projected population growth in the category for those aged over 65 by 2035. The district covers a wide geography with careful consideration needed for the location of new provision to ensure connection to local services and workforce recruitment.

Mid Sussex has four ECH services across the district with two located in Burgess Hill, one in Lindfield near Haywards Heath and one in East Grinstead. Mid -Sussex residents of ECH are a mixed age range, with a number of much younger adults using ECHs while the majority are older people aged 60 to 90 and over. The district of Mid Sussex has a mixture of urban, semi urban and rural areas that will influence the location of any new schemes to both serve local residents and deliver effective and sustainable services.

Worthing currently has three ECH services with the most recent opening in late 2023, the county’s first dedicated all-age service. Many Worthing residents are currently accessing ECH services outside of Worthing. The predominant age range for Worthing users of ECH is 75-79 years, but with a significant proportion of younger older adults and adults of working age. Along with Crawley, Worthing has the highest proportion of people with learning disabilities using ECH.
