Occupational therapy helps people of all ages to carry out daily actvities and live more independently by supporting them to learn or relearn skills that they are finding more challenging as a result of a disability, or because they are experiencing more difficulties as they get older. This includes suggesting specialist equipment or, following an assessment of people’s needs, making a recommendation for home adaptations such as, handrails, stairlifts and level access showers, to district and borough councils which provide the funding.
Staff focus on people’s strengths and promote their wellbeing through engagement in activities of daily living and meaningful occupations, both at home and in their local communities.
Our teams carried out need assessments with 5,260 adults and 732 children within the year.
The Regaining Independence Service provides short-term reablement and supported 1,831 residents over the year (1,766 in 2022-23), helping them to become or remain independent at home. This support may be needed after a stay in hospital, or just because people have not been coping as well as they would like at home. Of the 1,831 people supported, 73% (1,337) did not require ongoing care and support, achieving the goals they set. 85% of the remaining people needed at least 10% less support at home.
